ADEI installed limited-access shoring on the beach in Malibu to make way for a large new home and to repair and stabilize the rear of the property which was affected by a landslide. The project combined three existing lots and houses into a single new residence, and the shoring allowed excavation and new construction to move forward between neighboring oceanfront homes.
The Challenge
Building a new home of this size on the beach means excavating right next to the sand, the ocean, and the houses on either side. Access was limited, with the beach on one side, the street on the other, and neighboring homes close by. There was little room for equipment on the site, and the excavation had to stay within the property without undermining the adjacent homes.
ADEI’s Solution
ADEI built a shoring system using drilled caissons, shotcrete and wood lagging. The caissons were installed along the excavation perimeter to form the primary support, and wood lagging was placed between them as the excavation progressed to retain the soil behind the wall.
To work around the access limits, ADEI operated a crane from the street to reach the work area and place materials, and a crane was also positioned on the jobsite.
Outcome
The caisson and lagging shoring provided a stable excavation for the new home, allowing construction to proceed on a tight beachside site while protecting the neighboring properties.
