A slope failure in Beverly Ridge Estates, a hillside neighborhood in Los Angeles, severely damaged a newly built house above it. ADEI was brought in to perform the stabilization and repair of the failed slope.
The Challenge
The failure traced back to an ancient landslide that had been missed by previous geotechnical exploration. The house above was newly built when the hillside gave way beneath it.
That timing shaped the entire repair. There was no open, graded site to work from. The house was already in place, and the slope that should have supported it had moved out from under it. Crews had to work on the failed hillside below a damaged structure, with neighboring homes close by and limited room for equipment.
ADEI’s Solution
ADEI repaired the ancient landslide below the home with 4 rows of gradebeams and tiebacks, along with cantilevered shoring. The tiebacks anchor each row of gradebeams back into the hillside to stabilize the slide mass and restore support to the slope. Crews sequenced the work around the existing house and the adjacent residences.
Repairing a failure like this one means addressing the landslide itself, not just the surface damage. The goal was to stabilize the ground that had moved so the slope could once again support the home above it.
Outcome
The stabilization and repair addressed a landslide that had gone undetected before the house was built, giving the property a stable slope beneath the home and a path forward after severe damage.
